Veggie and Vegan eats!
Yesterday evening we took part in Vegbash 2019 at the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market. It was a beautiful Solstice celebration of all things vegetarian and vegan.
While we’re not strictly a vegetarian or vegan truck, we always have delicious veggie and vegan options to choose from. We also have plenty of choices in case you’d like to book us for a private event and need us strictly veggie or vegan!
Let’s get to the food!
We have to start with the Captain Planet. This sandwich is part of what we call the “core four” and is on the menu at every public event. Easily made vegan by leaving off the cheese and substituting dijon for the pesto aioli.
Sautéed portobello mushrooms, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, mozzarella and pesto aioli on a grilled hoagie.
The other Captain on our menu is the Captain America. This grilled cheese is a favorite of children and grownups alike. Though we admit, most kids want it without tomatoes.
Cheddar, mozzarella and tomatoes on grilled sourdough.
Sticking with the cheesy theme, we have to talk about what I think is the most decadent item on the menu, The Sinister.
Cheddar, mozzarella, herbed goat cheese, caramelized onions, arugula and dijon on grilled rye. Try this one with a fried egg… trust me.
Now, onto our purely vegan options. These aren’t on the menu too often, but when you see them I highly recommend snatching one up.
First, the Polaris. Avocado, roasted red peppers, spinach and dijon on toasted cherry walnut bread. This sandwich is light, fresh, complex and sweet.
The last of our sandwich options is one of my favorites. It’s also something we’re thinking about putting on the menu more often. Does this sound like a good idea to anyone else?
The Starfire. Sautéed portobello mushrooms, spinach, caramelized onions and garlic hummus on grilled rye.
Of course we can’t talk about our veggie options without mentioning our waffle fries and LOADED waffle fries. Named Chewy after Chewbacca and his weapon, the Bowcaster, people come from all over the galaxy to satiate their cravings with these crispy favorites.
Lastly we just want to shout out to a couple of our good friends that we saw at Vegbash.
Chantelle at VDaLish is THE BEST vegan baker in Detroit. If you haven’t seen her at a pop up and tried her Vegan Lemon Pound Cake, you are seriously missing out. Luckily for you, her baked goods are always available at our good friend’s Drifter Coffee in Ferndale!
Evan at Nakee Butter! Nakee Butter are spreads with benefits! Single serving pouches that can be eaten as is or spread on something else, they’re an amazing replacement for protein bars. Filled with nothing but healthy vegan ingredients. We love this guy and his Butters! Also… he gives THE best hugs ever.
